Worthing Open 3 Report

THIRD WORTHING OPEN – 2015/16

The third of the series of planned Open Competitions at the Clubcue Leisure in Worthing again attracted a disappointing entry of fifty players to the “Home of Sussex Darts”.
Only twelve of the Sussex County ‘s squad supported the event together with seven of the Youth team. With this lack of support the future of Worthing Opens is in grave doubt.
Sussex players achieved wins in four of the six competitions but the best performance of the day once again came from the Sussex Youth team player Alex Gurr, with the Crawley youngster winning the Mens Pairs, sharing the £90 prize money with partner Kevin Fishwick, and collecting a record £80 cash prize by winning the Youth Singles.
Returning to the competition scene after a lengthy absence through back problems, Eastbourne’s Jim Withers showed he had lost none of his form when he took the Open Singles and the £250 sponsored cash prize. Jim beat Danny King, Broadbridge 3-1 in the final.
From a small field Tina Neylon from Middlesex, partnered by local player Mary Bellchamber won the Ladies Pairs with a 3-2 win in the final against Eastbourne’s Emily White and Lisa Withers. Tina went on to take the Ladies Singles defeating Lisa Withers by 3-2.
The Flying Pairs event provided a second success of the day for Crawley’s Kevin Fishwick, partnered by local player Richard Snowdon,
contesting the final and winning 2-0 against the Sussex Youth pairing Connor Levett and lewis Gurney.
Of the fifty entries on the day, twenty four players shared the total prize money of £1018.

2nd Worthing Open - Report

The second of the series of planned Open Competitions at the Clubcue Leisure in Worthing attracted a disappointing entry of forty players and supporters to the “Home of Sussex Darts”.
The event clashed with the Bank holiday weekend which might explain why only seven of the Sussex County ‘s squad supported the event together with ten of the Youth team. Unless this changes and the attendance improves at the third Worthing Open at the end of June, there is a danger that Sussex may lose this venue, as happened last season with the Roffey Club
Sussex players achieved wins in four of the five competitions but the best performance of the day came from the Sussex Youth team player Alex Gurr, with the Crawley youngster the runner-up in the Open Singles collecting the £100 cash prize. Alex lost 3-2 to the Surrey star John Jenknson in the final.
With only six Ladies present the Pairs event was cancelled and the Singles was played as a Round Robin. Elaine Chapman was the eventual winner by two points from the joint second placed Denise Peake, Julia Saldanha and Nicole Gillam.
Worthing’s Mick Rodgers teamed up with his brother Simon to take the Mens Pairs with a 3-2 win m the final against the Essex/ Surrey duo Connor Scutt and Adam Howard.
In the Youth Singles Lewis Gurney, Lancing showed why he finished in the top eight of the Southern Youth Under-18s this season, when he defeated Surrey Under-21 Connor Scutt 2-0 in the final.
The ever popular Flying Pairs saw a County Mens “A” partnership of Danny King, Broadbridge and Terry Howes, Littlehampton contesting the final and winning 2-0 against the Worthing pairing Jules Saldanha and Graham Croft.
Of the forty entries on the day, twenty three players shared the total prize money of £760.
