LEAGUE CHAMPIONS (DAVE MILES CUP) LEWES
Littlehampton regained the “Dave Miles “ Cup in the Sussex Mens Winter Super League Championship at the Clubcue, Worthing, defeating last season’s champions Lewes by 6-2 in a well attended Divisional playoff.
Littlehampton scored 49 tons and two maximums with Lewes registering 40 tons and one maximum.
Lewes reached the playoffs after winning the East Division by five points from Hastings following an 8-1 win at home to Ringmer. Littlehampton’s win in the West Division was achieved with an 8-1 at home to Bognor Regis, to give them a twelve point lead at the top over Worthing.
Tony Cox got the ball rolling for Lewes with a 3-1 win against Simon Wood and Ricki Blay made it 2-0 for the Tally Ho team with a 3-0 win against Dan Bradford.
Littlehampton began their comeback with Aegir Bjornsson winning 3-0 against ex-PDC player Andy Relf and Craig Stoner levelling the match score, beating Jimmy Withers 3-1. Littlehampton took the lead with James Stephenson beating Micky Whiting in a close fought game 3-2. Preparing for his return to the County side next weekend, Littlehampton’s Greg Upton fought back from 2-0 down against Rod Hawkins to win 3-2 with two ton plus finishes which earned him a 26.99 average and the Man-of-the-Match award.
With Littlehampton leading 4-1 Lewes needed a fight back but unlike in last season’s playoff, Daniel Sains could not match Cliff Prior’s consistent scoring, going down 3-0 to clinch the title for Littlehampton. The final game of the evening proved a small consolation for Lewes with Dave Harding defeating Courtney Wilson 3-2, to make the final score 6-2 to Littlehampton who now hope to go one better in August, when they represent Sussex in the British Champions Cup.
